Proposed Samaritan House Storage and Meeting Room Building

On May 11th a proposal was submitted to BC Housing requesting funds to build a storage building behind the Samaritan House shelter that would have room upstairs for a meeting room. Below are some conceptual drawings of what the building might look like.

This building addresses existing deficits at the Shelter:

  1. Blankets, donated clothing, sundries, and supplies, are stacked in hallways. Recent Samaritan House renovations increased the capacity and functionality of the shelter by increasing dorm space and converting the third floor of the building to transitional units. A consequence of these renovations was a loss of storage and meeting room space.
  2. Garbage Bins are constantly vandalized with security chains and locks being cut repeatedly so that community garbage is deposited in the shelter’s bins. The problem is so severe that a second bin has been added for the excess garbage deposited by neighbors and other unknown parties.
  3. There currently is no appropriate room in the shelter that can be used for meetings, classes, groups, or presentations.
